Fraser Island

After getting arriving back from our sailing trip, Steph and I then headed to Rainbow beach. We had to take a long 12 hour bus ride to get from Airlie to Rainbow. When we got to Rainbow we realized there wasn't a whole lot to do there! We waited around writing post cards and checking our emails until we were able to check in. Once we settled in we met two people in our room, Steve (from England) and Marissa (from NY). We then met three more people that were also staying in our room Matilda and Menno (from Holland) and Christine (from Ireland). These people ended up being part of our Fraser Island group along with a couple from Holland (Lars and Laura) and two Canadian girls, Rebecca and Heather. The only way to get around Fraser is by 4X4 safari vans. The company we booked with supplied us with the vans, food, and all of the camping gear for our three day stay. We had such a blast riding around in the van and getting to know eachother. We had a great group and got along fairly well! We saw beautiful lakes on the island and a lot of beach. The lakes have tea tree oil in them...which made our hair and skin so soft! The lakes were absolutely amazing. One of them was in a valley that was 1.8 km from the road. To get there you had to walk over huge sand dunes that eventually sloped right down to the lake. You could roll/boogie board down these dunes right into the lake...it was so neat. We also walked through a creek that had huge eels in them! They would creep along side of you while you walked through....tad bit scary. Some of them were at least 3-4 feet long......and their heads looked like huge snake heads! On another day we walked up to a place called Indian head. From this lookout you could see huge dark shadows swimming in the water...sharks! This area of Fraser is known for huge sharks and manta rays. It was so cool to see big sharks in the wild! Overall we saw a lot of great wildlife on our trip.....dolphins, fish, sea turtles, sharks, rays, snakes, dingos, and eels. Steph and I felt so lucky throughout our whole vacation. Every day we just thanked God for the ability to do the things that we did and for the beautiful things we saw!
